Using sound (son-) to follow sparks of inspiration from their inception to their musical ideation (-iation) is at the essence of the improvised classical performances of Soniation Duo. Every moment has the potential to sprout in any direction, as Greg Bruce (saxophone) and James Hurley (piano) weave together themes which they create anew during every encounter.

Sometimes logical, sometimes whimsical; whether sure-footed or reckless, the two halves of Soniation Duo collide, mirror, and venture into uncharted territory to take the audience on an ever evolving, always fresh journey through new musical landscapes. In this journey, they explore the western classical tradition in spontaneous composition, hoping to inspire others to shake off the confines of canonized sheet music while embracing the spirit of great composers, whether Baroque or Romantic.

Being from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, these musicians traveled far and wide before coming together in this new duo project. Since 2024, Soniation Duo have developed and honed an intimate musical vocabulary which has flourished in performances in both Canada and Germany.
